Protect Our Neighborhood position on proposed CVB levy on STRS:
The vacation rental industry requested the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVB) add a special tax on vacation rentals.* If approved this move could ruin our neighborhoods entirely by encouraging even more home conversions to vacation rentals and even more “weekend warriors.” So…are they hotels? You’re darn right, they’re hotels. The CVB even defines them as “non-convention hotels.” But…with generous, city approved give-aways like: no costly health or safety inspections, no handicap ramps, no off street parking, no private trash removal, no fire sprinklers and lower TOT than resort hotels. For eight-plus years prior city councils have pandered to the industry’s greed and neglected the cries from residents trying to preserve their neighborhood community. These illegal, subsidized hotels need to go, like other more-progressive tourist cities have successfully done already. The proposed levy by the CVB is just one more reason why.
We ask our City Council to do what ever in their power to stop this tax from being approved.
* “The stated purpose of the CVB is to form a joint powers authority to jointly encourage, promote, and to do such other things as might be necessary to enhance, to the greatest extent possible, all aspects of the hospitality, convention and tourism industry in the Coachella Valley, and to attract visitors from markets, all to the benefit of the member organizations and their citizens.“ CVB Joint Powers Agreement, 3/20/15
